It’s all about the numbers…

A couple of weeks ago I sat down to figure out how much fabric I’ve bought so far this year, how much fabric I’ve sewn and how many garments I’ve made. Why you ask? Well one, because I’ve made a conscious decision to sew as much as possible from the fa…

Awesome Aluminum Pan Drawings

Aluminum Pan DrawingsDo your children love to color? Mine sure do! In fact, my oldest son recently remarked, “There is nothing better than a box of new markers and a fresh stack of white paper.” I have to agree with him, but I also think it’s fun to change things up once in a while. Boy, was he surprised when…

Can I Make this Design for Sale?

It’s all well and good to make original needlepoint for yourself using outlines or other templates. As long as you are making it for personal use (including giving as a gift), you’re fine. You are also fine if someone gives you a line-drawn canvas and pays you to stitch it because you are being paid […]

The Secret to Thicker Braids

The first secret to fuller-looking braids is that it isn’t one secret but many! When I first learned how to braid my hair, I was always disappointed by how thin my braids looked in comparison to those I was emulating. How much hair did they have?! Turns out not that much more than me; they just used a few easy tricks that made their braids look out-of-control thick! Over the…

Days End {Living Skirt Art}

We seem to be on a streak of recreating modern art for our Living Art Series.  Today we have a beautiful painting by Sheri Dinardi called Days End. Also, Ana from Analog has recreated a painting.  Don’t miss the teaser photo of her beautiful recreation at the end of this post. Days End is an oil painting on linen.  When this painting first grabbed our eye, it was a combination of the lighting and the amazing hair on the model that stood out.  In our home, Aria has magnificent hair, and we hoped we would be able to turn it into the

Japanese mini-muumuu

This is not my most flattering garment; instead, it is all about the fabric.  I selected this linen (Nani Iro Nuance) ages ago and loved the painterly print–it looks hand made.  The best way to showcase the large and rather subtle print was with a garment with as few seams as possible.  And since the fabric is Japanese, it is only fitting that I found the right pattern in one of my many

What I Made: Lana

I sew lace a lot, yet I have a fear of sewing it. Sewing lace that’s lined – no problem. I could do it with my eyes closed. Not really; I’m kidding! Sewing lace that’s unlined, however, that’s a horse of a different color. Have you seen the movie, A League of Their Own? There’s a great scene, one of my favorites, where Mae, played by Madonna, says, “What if at a key moment in the game, my uniform bursts open, and, oops, my bosom comes flying out.”

It’s an unrealistic scenario that most likely won’t happen, but I get what she’s saying. I’d say that 95% of the bras I make are lined (tricot, stretch mesh or powernet), and this is because I have the same unrealistic fear as Madonna. My thoughts, slightly exaggerated for effect
