Our Weekly Newsletter

June 20, 2017   /   byHawthorne Threads  / Categories :  Feeds

Hey there fabric friends! Once again, we have an exciting newsletter for you, starting with another fabric option for our Hawthorne Threads designed and printed collections. With this release comes the opportunity to chat about some of the compelling environmental advantages to digital printing, and why we are so excited to be at the forefront of this emerging technology.

Hawthorne Threads Organic Fabric

Digital printing offers an eco-friendly alternative to traditional rotary screen printing, with chief advantages in water and power consumption as well as the elimination of harmful chemicals. Instead of requiring hundreds of gallons of water to yield a single yard of screen printed fabric, our digital printing process is virtually water free. That advantage is two-fold; not only does digital printing avoid consumption of a limited resource, it also eliminates the need to dispose of toxic wastewater. According to the World Bank, the treatment and dyeing of textiles accounts for nearly 20% of industrial water pollution globally, second only to agriculture. (See more here and learn in depth here.) Furthermore, you'll be happy to know that we lessen our environmental footprint even more by printing with non-toxic, water based pigment inks that are biodegradable. Finally, the power consumption of digital printers is also a fraction of their screen printer counterparts, making this process an exciting step in moving towards sustainable practices in the textile industry. We are thrilled to take this process yet another step closer with the option to select our In House digitally printed fabrics on a 100% GOTS certified Organic Cotton. So not only is the process an eco-friendly option, so too can be the base cloth.

Sharp Corners with Chain Stitch

In her Field Guide to Birds, Carolyn Hedge Baird recommends Chain Stitch as one of only a few stitches great for outlining. I agree and I love to use and recommend it for thick outlines. There’s little problem with it if the line is straight or curvy. But what if your area has corners or […]
